PRESS RELEASE The Beechworth Chain Gang wish to advise that the upcoming Mountain Bike Gold Rush event from Beechworth-Yackandandah scheduled for Sunday May 13, 2007 has been cancelled. The race will not be going ahead as planned. The same handful of individuals who run these events need a break and the club consensus is to not run this years Gold Rush event to Yackandandah. This does not necessarily mean the end of the Gold Rush events to Yackandandah and Eldorado. The club will meet soon to determine the future of these and other events. We call on other clubs and individuals to help with the running of future events to keep the mtb scene alive in the north east. Despite the upcoming Gold Rush race being cancelled, a social ride of the Beechworth-Yackandandah course will still take place on Sunday May 13, 2007. The cost for non-members is a club donation and $5 for a social MTBA day licence (free if you are a MTBA member). There will also be limited transport available by bus and trailer back to Beechworth from Yackandandah. This will cost $5/person. Depending on the numbers that show up, the social ride will break up into at least 2 groups (ie- faster and slower riders). The meeting time for this social ride on Sunday May 13, 2007 is 10am at the Rail Trail Station. A full refund will be offered to everyone who has already pre-entered the race. GENERAL INFORMATION

MOUNTAIN BIKE GOLD RUSH - Beechworth-Yackandandah - A Cross-Country Race / Fun Ride from Beechworth to Yackandandah in NE Victoria. Ride to race or just ride at your own pace. There are two categories- Fun Class for those who don't want to race the clock and are content to enjoy the ride at their own pace. There is no prize money for the Fun Class category and riders will not be timed. The other category is the Race class with prize-money up for grabs. All Race class riders will be timed.

THE RIDE- The MTB Gold Rush ride starts at the historic Gold town of Beechworth and travels along quiet dirt back-roads and fire trails in the bush and finishes with a downhill singletrack section and sealed road into the town of Yackandandah. Total length is approximately 30km. There is some climbing involved but the ride starts in Beechworth at an altitude of 550 metres above sea-level, climbs up to 750 metres at the ride's highest point, then descends into Yackandandah at 300 metres. A BBQ Lunch and drinks are available in Yackandandah. The Fun Ride is slightly shorter and less technical than the Race Class ride. It's all about having fun so give it a go !

COST -Entry price is $15 for the Fun Class and $20 for the Race Class. Compulsory insurance for the event for everyone is through Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA). If you are not a member of MTBA, a day licence is available for $15.

HOW DO I GET BACK TO BEECHWORTH ? - At the end of the ride in Yackandandah, riders may take advantage of the optional transport available for you and your bike by bus and trailer for a small fee ($5) back to Beechworth. Please book and pay for this option on your entry form to secure transport. Alternatively, you or your friends can arrange your own transport shuttle. Buses will leave regularly from Yackandandah to Beechworth until the completion of the event.

LOCATION - The town of Beechworth is around a 3 hour drive from Melbourne in North-East Victoria. Travel up the Hume Fwy past Wangaratta and take the Beechworth turnoff. If coming from the north, Beechworth is a 35-40 minute drive from Albury/Wodonga. Follow the signs through Wodonga to Beechworth.

ACCOMODATION - We highly recommend that riders stay in the Beechworth area the night prior to the Mountain Bike Gold Rush event. For all your accomodation/travel enquiries and bookings, please call the Beechworth Tourist Information Centre on 1300 366 321. There's a range of accomodation available in Beechworth ranging from Caravan Parks to Motels, B&B's and pub style rooms. For non-riders, the town and area surrounding Beechworth has lots to offer- great shops, galleries, museums, a famous Bakery, walks, Historic Park and more ! TIME/ PLACE- Meet at the old railway station (the start of the Rail Trail) in Beechworth (will be signposted as you come into town from both directions). Registration (compulsory for all riders) is from 8.00am until 9.30am for everyone (race and fun class) on the day. Race start is 10am and Fun Class start at 10.05am.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING ? - Riders must be fully self-sufficient. Please bring along at least a basic pack with spare tubes and tools, water, some snack food and anything else that you're likely to need on the track. Helmuts are of compulsory.

CAN I REGISTER ON THE DAY ? - Yes, but we strongly recommend that you pre-book and send your entry forms with payment in to us to save you time on the day and make our job easier. If requiring transport for you and your bike from Yackandandah to Beechworth, please pre-book and pay to secure a place. Please do not post your entry forms and payment to us after Monday May 7, 2007. Entry forms sent after this date may not get to us in time. After this date, please enter and pay on the morning of the event- registration is from 8.00am until 9.30am for Fun and Race Classes. Alternatively, there will also be registration on Saturday May 12, 2007 between 6-7pm outside the Beechworth Bakery.
